64 percent against GOP megabill: Survey

64 percent opposed to GOP megabill: Survey

A recent survey revealed that nearly two-thirds of US adults disapprove of the “one big beautiful bill,” which recently passed in the House and sets the stage for President Trump’s agenda. This finding comes from a KFF Health Tracking Survey.

According to the survey released on Tuesday, 64% of respondents expressed their opposition to the bill. This sentiment spans across many demographics, including a significant number of Democrats, independents, and Republicans not affiliated with the GOP’s “Make America Great Again” faction, primarily due to concerns over taxation and spending.

In contrast, only 35% of those surveyed viewed the proposal positively. Interestingly, support was notably higher among MAGA-supporting Republicans, with 72% in favor of the bill.

A statement emphasized that public perceptions of the bill have been formed quickly, likely without a deep understanding of its contents. Many individuals still lack sufficient information about it. The statement noted that opinions could shift, even among MAGA supporters, as more details about the bill’s effectiveness become available.

The survey aimed to gauge respondents’ knowledge of the bill’s specific provisions. Findings showed that over half of those surveyed were aware that the bill would lead to increased federal spending on border security (58%). About half recognized it would contribute to a larger federal deficit (50%), while a significant number believed the bill would reduce federal food assistance for low-income Americans (53%) and Medicaid (51%). More than a quarter of respondents admitted they were unsure about any of the eight specific consequences outlined in the proposed law.

President Trump has branded this legislation as central to his second term, urging GOP lawmakers to incorporate numerous elements of his agenda. However, even among his staunchest supporters, there appears to be division regarding this sweeping legislation.

Earlier this month, Trump and Elon Musk made headlines after Musk resigned from his position at the White House Government Efficiency Bureau, subsequently referring to some proposals as “nasty hatred.”

Republican senators are currently working on revisions to the House’s version of the bill, with plans to finalize a measure for Trump to sign by July 4th.

Senate Majority Leader John Tune stated last week that discussions are ongoing with various groups and committees. He expressed confidence that progress is being made, noting, “Full speed, lots of conversation, everyone feels comfortable.”

The KFF survey involved 1,321 US adults from June 4th to 8th and carries a margin of error of 3 percentage points overall, and 6 percentage points when analyzed by party affiliation.
