Increased Security for Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium

This month, the Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, will see a significant police presence, aimed at preventing incidents similar to last year’s events that resulted in the arrest of 26 people.

During the 2024 Copa America final, chaos ensued as a crowd of ticketless fans rushed the gates for a match between Argentina and Colombia. Security struggled to manage the situation, leading to some disturbing moments.

“We have implemented extensive measures to safeguard our fans, players, and staff,” said Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Koldero Statz prior to the tournament. “The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is coordinating the entire security effort for this global event.”

This year, changes were introduced which require fans to go through three separate checkpoints before they can reach the stadium. Surrounding the venue, steel fencing has been installed to help control access.

The first checkpoint involves ticket verification at temporary gates in what’s usually the parking area where tailgate parties occur. Following that, fans will undergo airport-style screenings under a tent, where bags will be scanned.

Last year’s scene was chaotic; fans managed to get dangerously close to the stadium in a similar situation. “When I was at the finals, the guards opened the gates, and it just created chaos,” shared Edison Negron, a fan of Boca Juniors from Puerto Rico, reflecting on the previous year’s events.

Miami-Dade County has emphasized that such an occurrence “cannot happen again.” Det. Argemis Colome reassured the public that there will be a strong law enforcement presence at the stadium, with social media activity being monitored leading up to the matches. Additionally, preparations include special training for rapid response teams to handle any potential crowd issues.

“As situations change, we prepare for unpredictability from fans,” the sheriff’s office mentioned in a social media update.

To date, this robust police presence has been apparent during both games at Hard Rock Stadium. The opening match saw over 60,000 attendees watching Inter Miami play against Al Ahly, followed by nearly 56,000 fans for Boca Juniors versus Benfica.

Patrol vehicles line the interstate outside the stadium while officers are equipped with facial shields and protective gear. FIFA is reportedly collaborating closely with stadium management and various law enforcement agencies to ensure comprehensive security during the event.
