US Stock Futures and Market Trends
On June 17, 2025, a trader was on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
This Tuesday night, US stock futures were hovering around the flatline. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped by 7 points, which is about 0.02%. The S&P 500 Futures had a minor gain of 0.01%, while Nasdaq 100 futures increased by 0.02%.
Earlier in the day, amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 299.29 points, or 0.70%. The S&P 500 dropped by 0.84%, and the Nasdaq Composite decreased by 0.91%. Additionally, oil futures saw a significant decline of over 4%, putting pressure on inventories.
This downward trend in the stock market came ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, set for Wednesday afternoon. The Central Bank is expected to keep rates steady, but investors are keenly awaiting comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. The upcoming “dot plot” showing rate expectations will be under scrutiny, especially regarding policymakers’ future rate policies.
Middle Eastern tensions have been weighing heavily on investors. Just on Tuesday, President Donald Trump targeted Iran’s leaders through his social media platform, asserting, “Our patience is diminishing,” while demanding “unconditional surrender!” There are ongoing discussions among current and former administration officials about Iran’s potential military actions.
Considering the current climate, Adam Crisafulli, founder of Vital Knowledge, noted that the stock market appears increasingly vulnerable. He highlighted on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” that, “Even before events in the Middle East, there’s so much risk looming, and it’s rising; there’s little flexibility.” Tariffs, fiscal uncertainty, and debt ceilings are contributing to this anxiety, leaving limited room for error in absorbing the prevailing uncertainties.
Looking ahead, data scheduled for release on Wednesday includes housing starts and building permits from May, along with weekly unemployment claims. The stock market will be closed on Thursday for June’s holiday.
