New York Liberty’s Comeback Victory

In New York on Tuesday night, Sabrina Ionescu shone brightly, scoring a season-best 34 points. Her performance helped the New York Liberty pull off a significant comeback against the Atlanta Dream, bouncing back from their earlier loss over the weekend.

Interestingly, despite Ionescu’s impressive start—she racked up 20 points in the first half—the Liberty found themselves trailing by 17 points in the third quarter. This was especially concerning after losing to the Indiana Fever just last Saturday, marking their first defeat of the season.

As the game progressed, it seemed like the tables turned midway through the third quarter. “We didn’t play well; we lacked toughness and urgency,” remarked Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello, reflecting on the team’s performance in the first half. “But I think we found our identity and some energy. We need to play harder at times,” she added.

In the first half, New York recorded seven turnovers compared to Atlanta’s three, but they seemed to regain their momentum, rallying behind both Ionescu and teammate Breanna Stewart. Ultimately, the Liberty secured their tenth victory of the season, finishing the game at 86-81.

Ionescu’s back-to-back 30-point games are noteworthy, marking a milestone in her WNBA career. “We fought hard, and the game could have easily gone in a different direction,” she said, highlighting the team’s resilience. It’s worth mentioning they haven’t faced such a challenging situation this season before, which makes their response even more impressive.

In the matchup, Atlanta’s Tehina Pau Pao led her team with 16 points, closely followed by Allisha Gray with 14, and both Brionna Jones and Rhyne Howard, each contributing 13 points.

Meanwhile, the Indiana Fever, with a recent grit-filled victory, are set to face the Minnesota Lynx in the Commissioners Cup championship game on July 1st.
