California Governor Gavin Newsom, who previously had a podcast, has now added a new dimension to his outreach by launching a site on Substack. He introduced this initiative on Tuesday, referring to it as a means to cut through what he calls “The Noise.”
In a post featuring a video, Newsom emphasized the continuous fight against right-wing misinformation, stating, “There’s so much confusion and false information out there.” He noted, “The main question is how to rise above all of that and engage in genuine discussions. That’s why I’m starting on Substack. I hope you’ll join me so we can have important conversations during this critical time.”
In his initial exploration, Newsom shared a Fox News Digital Op-Ed titled “Trump is trying to destroy our democracy.” He also included an interview with Democratic strategist and TikTok creator Aaron Parnas, during which he conveyed that being part of platforms like Substack is essential for future democratic efforts. He believes his party needs to adopt a more “aggressive” approach.
Previously, Newsom launched his podcast, “This Is Gavin Newsom,” in March. In it, he discusses a range of topics and engages with both his supporters and figures from opposing views, such as Charlie Kirk and Newt Gingrich.
As a contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, Newsom’s visibility has increased, especially with California serving as a focal point in the discussion around Trump’s immigration policies. He has criticized President Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops and Marines in Los Angeles amid anti-ICE protests, stating, “These military personnel are trained for foreign combat, not for domestic issues. We honor their service, but we don’t want our city militarized by our own military.”
In his Fox News Digital piece, he wrote, “This action reveals Trump’s betrayal of our soldiers and Americans, forcing them to patrol communities they were meant to protect overseas. The presence of federal troops in LA won’t enhance community safety.”
Alongside Attorney General Rob Bonta, Newsom has taken legal action against Trump, alleging overreach in the deployment of the National Guard to manage unrest. Recently, a federal judge ruled in favor of California, ordering Trump to relinquish control of the National Guard back to Newsom.
US District Judge Charles R. Breyer stated, “The defendant is temporarily prohibited from sending members of the California State Guard into Los Angeles,” and instructed Trump to hand command back to Governor Newsom.
The White House spokesperson, Anna Kelly, criticized the ruling as an abuse of power that jeopardizes federal employees and indicated that the Trump administration intends to appeal. A federal appeals court is set to hear arguments on Tuesday regarding whether Trump can utilize the California National Guard for immigration enforcement and to manage ongoing protests.
