Cowboy Tactics in Washington State
In an unusual turn of events, Washington state deputies showcased some rather creative cowboy skills while dealing with a man wielding a chainsaw. Police body camera footage captures the dramatic moment when they had to tackle this dangerous situation.
“Using a lasso is definitely not something you see every day,” the assistant information manager from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office remarked to a local news outlet.
Deputies responded to a report of a confrontation between a son and his parents on Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival, they found the son chasing his father with a chainsaw, according to local reports.
It turned out the son, who is 32 years old and experiencing a mental health crisis, had retreated into a pond on the property, still holding the chainsaw.
In the footage, one deputy lieutenant tells the suspect, “I can’t talk to you with a chainsaw.” It felt, well, a bit surreal.
At one point, authorities even threatened to use a bean bag gun to subdue him.
After nearly an hour of trying to negotiate, an officer from a specialized unit that typically deals with large animals decided to take a different approach. He fetched a lasso from his vehicle.
The officer warned the suspect to exit the water. When he didn’t comply, he expertly threw the lasso, which, impressively, secured itself around the man’s torso.
As the suspect struggled to break free, he called out that he was being pulled back to land. Meanwhile, another deputy humorously threatened, “I’ll get a chainsaw!”
Fortunately, no one was injured during this strange standoff. The deputies made sure to take the suspect, whose name hasn’t been disclosed, to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
“It was a significant job for these officers thinking outside the box to ensure safety for everyone involved,” Kappett stated during an interview.
This incident marked the first time a lasso, typically used in farming, was deployed to address a criminal situation, according to the sheriff’s office.
As Kappett raised an important question, “How do you manage someone in a mental health crisis armed with a dangerous weapon?” he concluded, “In this case, the lasso certainly did the trick.”
