Defense Secretary Clashes with Senator During Hearing
During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegses visibly frustrated Senator Jackie Rosen, a Democrat from Nevada, after he informed her that she had run out of time to ask him questions.
Hegses remarked that Rosen had a role in the dismissal of senior Pentagon officials while he was being interrogated about the recent firing of General Timothy Howe, who was let go in April. Despite her persistent questioning on the matter, Hegses maintained that she could no longer pose questions.
“Do you think it’s appropriate for social media to influence HR decisions in your department?” Rosen inquired.
“I believe your time is up, Senator,” Hegses responded.
“It’s not your place to decide when my time is up. Secretary, you seem careless or perhaps even conspiratorial. You clearly lack control over your department, and that’s concerning,” she retorted.
Rosen then expressed that she wasn’t thanking him as she concluded her inquiry with a hint of derision.
Hegses continued to respond to her remarks. Meanwhile, reports surfaced that right-wing figure Laura Rumer had provided research to Trump suggesting he dismiss various staff members, which resulted in several layoffs the following day.
Rumer mentioned to the Washington Post that Trump urged Howe to take action. General Milley was involved in the U.S. withdrawal plans from Afghanistan in 2021, culminating in a tragic incident that led to the deaths of 13 service members and numerous Afghan civilians due to a bombing at Abbey Gate.
In another development, former President Joe Biden made an appointment to lead the National Security Agency (NSA) and Cyber Command in 2023.
