Rutgers standout Ace Bailey is making headlines as he approaches the NBA Draft, signaling his intentions with some strategic moves.
He recently canceled a training session scheduled with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN’s Draft Express.
Surprisingly, Bailey is the only prospect based in the U.S. who hasn’t met with any teams and has turned down multiple invitations from franchises where he’s likely to be drafted.
Widely regarded as a lottery pick, he’s anticipated to land in the top three selections.
Draft Express noted that the Sixers are still considering him for the No. 3 pick.
Meanwhile, teams like the Wizards (No. 6), Pelicans (No. 7), and Nets (No. 8) are expected to make aggressive moves to secure Bailey during Wednesday’s draft.
The Utah Jazz, holding the No. 5 pick, could also be an option for him.
The Hornets have the fourth pick but reportedly didn’t impress Bailey enough to make him want to work out with them—especially since he seems uninterested in playing alongside LaMelo Ball.
Previously, Bailey’s camp indicated he believes he’s among the top three players available, seeking a clear path to becoming a star.
Draft Express also mentioned that Bailey is likely to find a comfortable fit with another team if it comes down to a later selection or a trade.
Not too long ago, the 76ers were considering Baylor freshman VJ Edge.com, who’s projected to be the No. 4 prospect.
Some fans are speculating about Bailey’s unusual choices, suggesting he may have received assurances from other teams about being drafted.
Jason Dumas of ABC reported that Bailey asked for a meeting with the Sixers prior to the cancellation.
Bailey’s teammate, Ron Harper, is projected as the consensus No. 2 pick, while Duke’s Cooper Flagg is considered the No. 1 overall selection.
Bailey had a strong showing at the NBA Draft Combine, concluding his season at Rutgers with impressive averages of 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and shooting 46%, along with 1.3 assists and a three-point shooting percentage of 34.6.
