Pope Leo XIV showcased his enthusiasm for the White Sox once again in Vatican City.
Durning a general audience at St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday, the American-born pope was welcomed with cheers as supporters broke into a “White Sox” chant, oblivious to the reputation of Chicago sports fans.
As the Popemobile neared the crowd of White Sox admirers, a video recorded by TikTok user Jacobusch.Clan captured Pope Leo XIV enthusiastically saying “White Sox.”
This show of support followed closely after the pope was seen wearing White Sox hats while greeting visitors, including a newlywed couple.
Pope Leo XIV’s devotion to the White Sox made global news last month when he became the first American pope, succeeding Pope Francis. He passed away at 88 after a prolonged battle with double pneumonia in April.
Speculation arose about whether Pope Leo XIV supported the White Sox or the Cubs, but his brother clarified the situation.
“He was never a Cubs fan, so I don’t know where that came from,” John Pribble commented to local Chicago news station WGN TV. “He’s always been a Sox fan. Our mother liked the Cubs. I don’t know; I think my dad was a Cardinal fan, so it’s all a bit mixed up.”
“And they were all Cubs fans since our mom’s family came from the north.”
Shortly after his election, Pope Leo XIV, originally Robert Prevost, was honored with a graphic installation at the White Sox’s electronic field stadium.
While the White Sox spirit was high, the team’s performance left much to be desired, as they faced a downward trajectory, losing their last six games.
Currently in last place in the AL Central with a record of 23-50, the White Sox are hoping for a win against the Cardinals on Thursday, June 10th.
