Carly Simon Supports Sabrina Carpenter’s Album Cover

Carly Simon has stepped in to defend Sabrina Carpenter following the buzz around Carpenter’s album cover for “Man’s Best Friend.” In a recent interview, Simon discussed the artwork, which features Carpenter in a striking pose on her hands and knees, dressed in a black mini dress and matching heels. The image certainly turned heads.

Simon expressed that the backlash Carpenter is facing seems somewhat mild compared to what artists like herself have experienced in the past. She remarked, “She’s not doing anything outrageous,” during her conversation with Rolling Stone. Simon highlighted that the reaction feels disproportionate, saying, “You’re so useless,” in a more reflective tone about today’s music industry.

Simon noted that there have been much bolder album covers, recalling the notorious “Sticky Fingers” from The Rolling Stones, which she regarded as one of the most provocative artworks. She pondered why Carpenter’s cover has drawn so much criticism, suggesting it might be related to a double standard.

Fans had mixed reactions to Carpenter’s cover when it was posted online. While some felt uncomfortable with the imagery, others supported the artist, wishing her well on her journey to becoming an icon.

Reflecting on her past, Simon recounted her own experiences with similar backlash for her 1975 album “Playing Possum.” She mentioned that while people surely reacted to her cover at the time, they often didn’t voice their true feelings directly to her. Her cover featured a portrait of her in a lace black dress, which wasn’t without controversy either.

Simon stated, “Is there an entire debate about what it represents?” and went on to say that she found Carpenter’s cover to be a beautiful shot, capturing a unique energy that resonates with women. Meanwhile, Carpenter is known for her bold performances, and her recent concert in Paris certainly showcased that. During her “Short N’Sweet” world tour, she engaged in provocative dance routines, leaving some fans split on their opinions regarding appropriateness, especially for younger fans who admire her.

In this evolving landscape of artistry, Carpenter, like Simon, seems to be navigating the balance between personal expression and public perception.
