Florida Father Charged in Toddler’s Death

A Florida man was arrested on Thursday following a tragic incident involving his 18-month-old son, according to local law enforcement. Scott Allen Gardner, 33, faces charges of child manslaughter and negligence that led to serious injury resulting in death.

Authorities from the Ormond Beach Police Department played a key role in Gardner’s apprehension.

On June 6th, after taking his son for a haircut, Gardner reportedly left the child in a hot vehicle for more than three hours. The police mentioned that medical personnel estimated the boy’s temperature might have reached a staggering 111 degrees. In addition, it was noted that Gardner provided conflicting statements regarding the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.

Gardner was arrested at his mother’s residence in Ormond Beach, where he was taken into custody by the same officer who had attempted to revive the boy.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) emphasizes the dangers of leaving children unattended in cars, stating that even leaving a child for a brief period can be hazardous. They explained that a child’s body temperature can escalate three to five times faster than an adult’s, which creates a quickly dangerous situation.

This incident marks the seventh death of a child in a hot car this year, and it’s unfortunate that it also contributes to the growing concern regarding vehicular heatstroke incidents. In fact, reports indicate that in 2024, 39 children suffered fatal heat strokes in vehicles, marking a 35% increase compared to the previous year.
