Controversy Surrounds Stephen A. Smith’s Comments on Memphis
Former ESPN host Jason Fitz didn’t take kindly to Stephen A. Smith’s remarks about Memphis.
Fitz, who used to work on ESPN’s digital and radio platforms, suggested that Smith often appeared unprepared during his segments on the network. This followed Smith’s recent comments on a show addressing safety concerns some NBA players have while in Memphis.
Smith acknowledged Memphis as a solid sports city but added, “Some NBA players don’t feel it’s the safest environment. I’ve talked to local officials in Memphis, and they find it astonishing. It’s something that needs to be addressed.” He mentioned players like Jimmy Butler specifically.
In response, Fitz urged Smith to get ready for his discussions. “Honestly, Stephen A. is one of the least prepared people I’ve encountered in my career,” Fitz remarked.
Prior to his layoff in 2023, Fitz mentioned that Smith had questioned his authority on Memphis, saying he put in 80-hour work weeks. “Sure, Stephen A. is busier than I was back then. But I wonder how well he knows Memphis—its culture, its basketball,” he reflected.
Fitz further probed, “What does Smith really know about Memphis? I mean, does he only base his opinions on what friends are texting him?”
He also criticized Smith for relying heavily on stereotypes. “It seems all he knows is what’s fed to him. I doubt he’s even watched a Grizzlies game in quite some time,” Fitz added.
“Stephen A. has a team that provides him with the necessary info, but that doesn’t mean he’s fully engaged with the games,” he continued.
In a surprising turn, Memphis Mayor Paul Young publicly welcomed Smith to the city, reflecting the spirit of ESPN. Young expressed appreciation for Smith’s sentiments in a post on X, stating, “I want to be an advocate for progress. I invite you to come to Memphis as my guest. Let’s make it happen!”
