A Minnesota man named Vance Boetler has reportedly sent a bizarre letter to the FBI. In this letter, which is about 1.5 pages long, the 57-year-old claims that a former Democratic vice presidential candidate directed him to assassinate Senator Amy Klobuchar as part of a convoluted scheme to replace her in the Senate. Sources familiar with the situation shared this information with the Minnesota Star Tribune, indicating the letter reflects Boetler’s muddled thinking.
Boetler is currently facing allegations of murdering Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband. In a disturbing attack early on June 14, he allegedly approached Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, while wearing a creepy latex mask and a police uniform.
Neither Governor Walz nor Senator Klobuchar addressed the contents of Boetler’s letter directly, but they both released statements responding to the shooting incident. A spokesman for Walz noted the governor’s appreciation for law enforcement efforts in apprehending the suspect, describing Boetler as a serious threat. Klobuchar echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude that the authorities managed to arrest him before he could harm more people.
Following a significant manhunt involving 10,000 acres, Boetler was captured in Sibley County. Investigators encountered a standoff at Hoffman’s residence, where he had previously fled, leaving behind a “manifesto” that reportedly listed the names of 70 politicians he intended to target.
Facing both federal murder and stalking charges, Boetler could potentially be sentenced to death if convicted.
