Scott Payne’s Journey of Faith After a Dark Encounter

Scott Payne, a former undercover investigator, shared his poignant story during an interview with Glenn Beck. He spent a considerable part of his career infiltrating some of the most notorious groups in the U.S., including the Outlaws Motorcycle Club and the KKK. His past experiences are chilling, but one particular memory from his youth stands out even more.

Payne, who grew up in a Christian household—his grandfather was a pastor—lost his faith amid the turmoil of his parents’ divorce. This period of his life led him astray into the world of the occult, where, perhaps naively, he first dabbled in what he describes as “magic.” “It started off kind of innocent and dumb,” he reflected. “But I got deeply involved in dark rituals, even wanting to sign a blood contract,” a path that took him into a “really dark place.”

One fateful night at a friend’s party, things took a turn he could never have predicted. As he began to emulate voices from horror films, he engaged in performances aimed to shock or provoke reactions. Yet, at that moment, he wasn’t just playing around. What happened next shocked him to his core.

In a moment of eerie clarity, he suddenly found himself face-to-face with a supernatural being. “What I saw was all red, like a hazy image,” he described. “The demon was looking at me with this twisted finger and nails, smiling, beckoning me closer.” It’s hard to imagine how he must have felt. “I was panting and sweating,” he added.

What’s perhaps even more unsettling is his friend’s reaction to the incident. Having warned Payne about the dangers of such darkness prior, his friend looked directly into his eyes and said, “I told you, didn’t I?” As it turned out, he had witnessed the same apparition.

This traumatic encounter spurred Payne to rush to the Edwards Road Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina. “I think I sat through all the services that night,” he recounted, feeling as though he was in an almost desperate need for spiritual refuge.

That night marked a pivotal change in Payne’s life. The horrifying encounter fortified his faith in Christ, leading him into a life filled with challenges as he continued his battle against the dark forces, not as a frightened teenager, but as a determined FBI agent.
