Iran: US 'chose to destroy' diplomacy

Rising Tensions: US-Iran Conflict Escalates

An Iranian diplomat has accused the United States of “deciding to blow up diplomacy” following its involvement in a strike against Israel late Saturday night. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragachi expressed concerns about “eternal consequences” as the region spirals into uncertainty after President Trump’s announcement of multiple strikes targeting significant nuclear facilities in Iran.

“This morning’s event is absurd and will have lasting repercussions,” Aragachi commented on social media shortly after the strikes. He emphasized that Iran would consider all options to safeguard its sovereignty and the well-being of its people.

President Trump, in a social media message, warned Iran against retaliatory actions, urging the nation to pursue peace. He stated, “Iran’s retaliation against the United States will meet a much greater force than what was seen tonight. Thank you!”

Aragachi characterized the US strikes as illegal, suggesting that they destabilized ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Israel involving the European Union and other nations. He implied that the US might team up with Israel to derail diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions, particularly concerning its uranium enrichment program.

“Last week, when Israel chose to sabotage diplomacy, we were in talks with the US. This week, after the US opted to do the same, we were engaging with the E3/EU. What does that tell you?” he questioned on X.

Support for Trump’s decision has emerged from both Republican and Democratic circles, following the strikes on Iran that began on June 13th. British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer acknowledged the US actions as necessary to counter the Iranian threat regarding nuclear development but cautioned that the Middle East remains unstable, emphasizing the importance of returning to diplomatic measures.

Starmer stated, “The situation in the Middle East is unstable; stability in the region is essential. We urge Iran to come back to the negotiation table and seek a diplomatic resolution to this crisis.”

Rafael Grossi, the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced an emergency meeting for the agency’s board of directors on Monday.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced profound concern over the US’s application of force against Iran. He warned of the potential for the conflict to escalate dramatically, stating, “There’s an increased risk that this conflict could spiral out of control, with devastating consequences for civilians, local communities, and the wider world.”
