Former general describes Trump's Iran nuclear strike as a brave and positive action

General McCaffrey Calls Trump’s Iran Strike a Decisive Move

Retired General Barry McCaffrey shared his thoughts on MSNBC with Nicole Wallace on Saturday, describing President Donald Trump’s recent military action against Iran’s nuclear program as “a bold and good move” in numerous ways.

From his military viewpoint, McCaffrey considered the attack to be “decisive, bold, and consequential,” especially since Iran was in a weakened position at the time. He emphasized that the U.S. had the capabilities to inflict long-term damage on Iran’s nuclear efforts.

In a speech delivered from the White House, Trump announced that the U.S. had targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities, declaring that one nuclear enrichment site had been “completely wiped out.”

McCaffrey admitted he was taken aback by Trump’s decision to order the strike but reiterated that it could benefit both Israel and the United States.

However, he expressed concerns about the political fallout for Trump, noting that the decision might present a disaster for him. “His own party is divided on this issue. Democrats are against it, and many Americans disapprove, particularly without considering a possible Iranian counterattack,” he added.

He warned of the significant chance of retaliation from Iran, implying that “we are already at odds with Iran.” When Wallace probed whether Trump was effectively at war with Iran, McCaffrey suggested that there was still hope in negotiations.

“I think he’s possibly mistaken about that,” he said, arguing that while the Iranians have limited military options, one option could disrupt oil prices significantly, especially if they were to close the Persian Gulf.

Following the strike, Iran condemned the U.S. action, which targeted three nuclear sites. Retired Brigadier General Mark Kimmit spoke to CNN’s Anderson Cooper, expressing his admiration for the U.S. strike and praising Trump’s strategic use of “deceit and trickery.”

Kimmit remarked on the situation’s complexity, comparing it to a negotiation where the terms change abruptly, like a prospective buyer having a deal fall through after an apartment gets destroyed. He suggested that this use of deception might have ultimately saved American lives.
