Zohran Mamdani criticizes the US attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities

Zohran Mamdani, a mayoral candidate known for his anti-Israel stance, has described the recent US bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities as “unconstitutional military action.”

“Donald Trump campaigned on the promise of ending wars, not starting new ones,” he stated in a post on social media. He expressed his concerns about what he views as a significant betrayal, suggesting that this incident could lead to increased global chaos. “In a city as interconnected as ours, the impacts of such conflicts resonate deeply,” he added.

Mamdani criticized the political establishment for prioritizing military spending over addressing pressing issues like poverty and peacebuilding. “For many young and middle-aged Americans, this constant state of conflict is all we’ve really known,” he remarked. “We can’t continue to accept this.”

The mayoral campaign of Eric Adams did not respond immediately regarding the US airstrikes; however, fellow democratic candidate Brad Lander also condemned the bombing. He labelled it a “dangerous escalation” that endangers lives in Iran, Israel, and the United States. “My thoughts are particularly with families worried about their loved ones in Iran right now,” Lander said.

In his defense of the strikes, Trump stated that the objective was to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities to counteract the threats posed by state-sponsored terrorism.

The airstrike occurred amid the ongoing Democratic primary in New York, which could potentially influence voting decisions. Following the attack, Mayor Eric Adams, who is campaigning for re-election, ordered increased police presence around sensitive sites in the city, emphasizing concern for the Persian community in New York.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a close ally of Mamdani, remarked that Trump’s actions could be seen as the “justification for every bullet fired.” Meanwhile, Mamdani’s position on Israel has drawn criticism due to his support for boycott movements and his unwillingness to denounce certain protests related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
