Hamas leader's terror strategy fails as Israel focuses on Iran and Hezbollah

Recent Developments in Middle Eastern Conflict

JERUSALEM – The late Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, had anticipated that Israel’s actions on October 7, 2023, would trigger a widespread conflict with Israel and its allies in the Middle East, particularly involving Hezbollah and Iran-backed groups. These factions have long had the primary goal of dismantling the Jewish state.

However, Sinwar’s expectations quickly unraveled into a series of unintended, disastrous outcomes for Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and their allied forces.

Trump Discusses Military Action Against Iran

President Donald Trump’s recent decision to strike Iran’s significant nuclear site marked a striking reversal of Sinwar’s ambitions. “When you consider the repercussions of October 7, it indicates a significant shift in the Middle East,” noted Israeli security analyst Sarit Zehavi from the Alma Research and Education Centre.

The present situation could be detrimental to Hamas, particularly looking towards 2024.

Decline of Hamas in Gaza

In a high-stakes operation on July 31, 2024, Israel successfully targeted Ismail Haniyeh, a Palestinian figure overseeing Hamas’ Political Bureau, while he was in Iran. Following this event, Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, vowed to retaliate. Later, in October of the same year, Israel managed to eliminate Sinwar himself. Just last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that they had taken down Sinwar’s brother, Mohammed, who was behind a substantial terrorist tunnel network on the Israeli border.

Israel’s Operations Against Hezbollah

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) initiated a key operation against Hezbollah, resulting in the death of leader Hassan Nasrallah in September 2024. Prior to this, Mossad executed a cyberattack that triggered an explosion of communication devices used by Hezbollah members, leading up to Nasrallah’s demise.

Reports indicate that Hezbollah had been planning to invade Israel, but the significant losses appear to have deterred their involvement in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iranian-backed entities.

Iran’s Military Influence Targeted

In another significant action, Israel claimed responsibility for targeting some of Iran’s top military figures. Zehavi expressed caution regarding the credit assigned to Sinwar’s strategic decisions, indicating the complex dynamics within the region.

She mentioned Isadil, who played a role in the Palestinian oversight within Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, highlighting his deep connections to the October 7 plans.

Zehavi conveyed that it’s premature to predict the future direction of these changes in the Middle Eastern landscape. The events on October 7 underlined the urgent need for action against those threatening Israel’s existence, emphasizing that with U.S. support, Israel aims to systematically eliminate such threats. Nonetheless, she warned that it remains uncertain whether these terrorist groups will recover from their recent setbacks.
