Smith College Faces Civil Rights Complaints

A prominent all-women’s university in the U.S. is dealing with civil rights complaints, which reportedly have resulted in some men ending up in hospitals and silencing student voices.

According to its admission policy, Smith College accepts anyone who identifies as a woman. Federal complaints have been lodged by the Defense Education on this matter. The institution also has a Bias Response Team that addresses incidents involving “bias, harassment, or threats” based on aspects like “gender identity” and “gender expression.”

As noted, “Smith is a women’s university and is considering applications from those who identify as women.” This includes cisgender, transgender, and non-binary individuals. More details can be found on their enrollment page.

Sarah Partial Perry, a vice president at the Daily Call News Foundation, expressed that the organization is focused on ensuring equal educational opportunities. There’s a concern that a university might seek to reinterpret Title IX to permit transgender-identified men access to women-only areas and admissions.

Smith College did not provide a response to inquiries from the Daily Call News Foundation.

Title IX was enacted over 50 years ago to guarantee equal opportunities for women and girls in education and sports. Recently, a tweet from Secretary Linda McMahon highlighted the importance of defending that objective.

According to complaints from the Defense Education, all campus restrooms are designated for specific genders, though some facilities, like an all-gender locker room in the sports complex, exist. The university also provides gender-affirming services, including cross-hormonal treatment and referrals for surgeries and abortion.

Initially signed into law on June 23, 1972, Title IX aimed to protect women from discrimination in federally funded programs. However, under the Biden administration, the rules were revised to include “gender identity,” which was later challenged and retracted after facing legal issues.

Since then, the Trump administration emphasized a return to a biological definition of sex regarding federal policies.

“History teaches us valuable lessons,” Perry stated, emphasizing the ongoing need to protect Title IX to ensure equality for all students in American education.
