Local Dissent Over Bezos and Sanchez’s Venice Wedding
As preparations ramp up for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s wedding in Venice, Italy, many residents have voiced their concerns about the potential impact on the city’s already burdened tourism scene. Locals are worried that the high-profile event could exacerbate existing issues related to tourism overload.
Despite ongoing criticism, the wedding planner for Bezos and Sanchez noted that the couple has actively encouraged local participation in the festivities. The team at Lanza & Baucina Limited stated, “As an event organizer with over 24 years of experience in Venice, it’s crucial to address the misinformation out there regarding this wedding.” They emphasized that their clients are committed to minimizing disruption and focusing on local employment during the event.
In a statement, the planners mentioned, “Rumors about us taking over the city are unfounded and go against our intentions.” They asserted that the arrangements, including water taxis and gondolas, have been proportionally booked to ensure there wouldn’t be overwhelming crowds. The goal has always been to limit negative effects for both residents and visitors alike.
Most specifics about the wedding remain under wraps, but one local humorously claimed to have insider information, sparking curiosity among community members.
Federica Toninello, a protest organizer, declared, “We won’t allow Bezos at certain venues,” referencing known event locations. She added a passionate note on how the tourist industry increasingly marginalizes long-term residents, emphasizing that many locals can no longer afford to live in their own city.
Despite the protests, the Mayor of Venice, Luigi Burgnaro, expressed pride over the wedding’s selection of the city as a venue. He referred to it as a significant opportunity to spotlight Venice on a global stage.
Venice, which has a population of around 50,000, sees about 20 million visitors annually, primarily day-trippers. City officials clarified that of the 280 water taxis, only about 30 are set aside for the wedding, with few hotels booked for the occasion.
An official commented that Venice is accustomed to hosting major events and assured that the wedding’s 250 guests would seamlessly blend into the city’s daily life, maintaining respect for residents and local rhythms.
The wedding is set to take place this weekend, with a host of celebrities expected, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Oprah Winfrey, among others.
