Shooting Incident at a Michigan Church

Authorities in Michigan reported that the suspect involved in a church shooting near Detroit on Sunday had familial ties to the congregation. Specifically, the suspect’s mother is a member of the church, and he had attended services there in the previous year.

Wayne police received multiple emergency calls around 11 a.m. from the area located approximately 30 minutes southwest of Detroit.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect driving a silver SUV erratically in the parking lot of Crosspoint Community Church. After parking, witnesses observed a white man clad in camouflage and a tactical vest retrieving a weapon from his vehicle before heading toward the church.

Minutes later, police reported additional calls indicating that shots were being fired, with one church member claiming they were attacked by the suspect.

Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. stated that a member of the church actually assisted in driving the suspect.

In a press conference, Wayne’s Police Chief Ryan Strong noted the quick response from law enforcement as gunfire erupted from the suspect’s vehicle and remarked on the situation’s seriousness.

Upon hearing the shots, the church’s security team swiftly locked the front door, initiating a defense protocol. During the confrontation, a security team member shot and killed the suspect after attempts to revive him failed.

One member of the security team was reported to have sustained a foot injury and was subsequently hospitalized, where he remained in stable condition post-surgery. Importantly, this individual did not return fire at the shooter.

Pastor Kelly added that although shots were directed at the church, the attacker never entered the building, and police are still determining the total rounds fired during the incident.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Brian Anthony Browning from Romulus, Michigan, was armed with an AR-15-style rifle equipped with numerous high-capacity magazines, a semi-automatic handgun, and extensive ammunition reserves.

Police indicated that Browning’s mother was part of the church and confirmed that he had attended services sporadically over the past year. Following the shooting, law enforcement executed a search warrant at his residence, where they seized additional firearms and considerable ammunition.

Despite having no previous encounters with law enforcement, investigators believe Browning may have been facing a mental health crisis. Notably, the image released by police was not a mug shot but originated from his driver’s license.

Authorities stated there’s no evidence to suggest the shooting was connected to any international conflict.

A Wayne resident recalled the alarming sounds of the shooting, mentioning that he initially thought it was construction noise before learning the gravity of the situation later. He expressed sorrow over the incident, mentioning that he knew individuals who attended the church.

During the time of the shooting, approximately 150 people were attending special Bible School services, which included a higher than average number of children.

Chief Strong expressed gratitude toward the church staff for their swift action, which likely prevented further casualties. He reiterated that the church members were trained to handle emergency situations.

The motives behind the shooter’s actions remain unclear. In the aftermath, church officials noted that they had established a security team in response to rising violence at places of worship over the past decade. Pastor Kelly reassured the community that Crosspoint was not under a specific threat and mentioned that the children present on Sunday were coping with the aftermath.
