US Strike Against Iran Raises Nuclear Concerns
During a recent episode of CNN’s “Source,” Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) expressed that the US military action against Iran has accelerated the timeline for Iran’s nuclear program. He also emphasized that Israel has the capability to dismantle these facilities, regardless of US involvement. Merkley mentioned that President Trump is advocating for the use of pressure on Netanyahu to support a ceasefire.
Merkley is in favor of a ceasefire, noting, “The president stated over the weekend that we should use leverage with Netanyahu to secure a ceasefire.”
When host Kaitlan Collins inquired whether a ceasefire would indicate support for Trump’s strikes, Merkley replied, “No, because these strikes did not address an imminent threat. Iran does not pose an immediate danger to us, and the president did not seek congressional approval. Additionally, Israel had already indicated a timeline extension for their nuclear program.”
Collins then posed a question about whether Iran might agree to a ceasefire had the US not conducted the recent strikes.
Merkley responded, “First, we need to examine the aftermath regarding the ceasefire’s role and the diplomatic efforts surrounding nuclear programs, as well as the ongoing development of proxy and ballistic missiles in the region. There are still many unanswered questions. However, Israel has made it clear that they could effectively take out these facilities with or without US support. It’s unlikely they would use a 30,000-pound bomb for this, but they do seem quite confident in their abilities. So, did that happen as planned? Probably not. Yet, I don’t think this alters the broader dynamic at play.”
He later noted that the specifics of the ceasefire are still not clearly defined, and the full impact of the military action remains uncertain.
