Authorities find 60 'critically missing' children in Florida effort

Tampa, Florida – The U.S. Marshals Service collaborated with a range of federal, state, and local agencies for what is being hailed as the most successful child recovery mission in its history.

Named Operation Dragon Eye, this two-week initiative aimed to recover or safely identify critically missing children in Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties.

In total, authorities reported that 60 critically missing children were either recovered or placed safely during this operation.

What stood out about this effort was that not only were these minors—aged nine to 17—recovered, but they also received physical and psychological support. Follow-up services were included to help ensure these youths don’t end up back on the streets, where they might be exploited again.

The U.S. Marshals Service defines “critical missing” children as those who are particularly vulnerable to violent crimes, often facing heightened risks tied to issues like substance abuse, sexual exploitation, and domestic violence.

“Operation Dragon Eye was not just about recovery; it was a community-focused initiative,” said a representative for the operation. The mission had three main goals: to recover these missing youths, provide essential services, and confront individuals taking advantage of their situations.

Alongside the recoveries, the operation also led to the arrest of eight individuals on various charges, including human trafficking and drug possession.

According to the St. Petersburg Police, they managed to locate 11 minors and apprehended two individuals involved in trafficking.

“This operation exemplifies the power of cooperation,” commented Tampa Police Chief Lee Belkou. “These arrests and recoveries illustrate our ongoing commitment to protecting those who are most vulnerable in our community.”
