Navy Addresses Ammunition Concerns Amid Global Threats

The U.S. Navy faced questions from lawmakers regarding its plans to replace and maintain ammunition stockpiles, especially given recent global tensions. There have been concerns over the rapid use of munitions to support Israel against Iranian attacks, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

During a hearing about the naval budget in Washington state, Admiral James Kilby, the chief of naval operations, responded to queries from Senator Brian Schatz from Hawaii about the Navy’s ammunition reserves. Schatz pointed out that the latest conflict in the Middle East involved significant usage of munitions for defending Israel against Iran. He asked if the Navy currently has enough Standard Missile-3s to counter global threats.

In response, Kilby assured, “We’ll do that, sir. But, as you mentioned, we use these at an impressive pace. They are missiles that our defense agencies acquire and then deliver to the Navy.”

The Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) serves as a crucial tool for the Navy, designed to intercept and neutralize short- to medium-range ballistic missiles.

Senator Mitch McConnell also stressed the need for increased ammunition and defense capabilities, saying that recent conflicts have shown a clear demand for more resources. He inquired about the Navy and Marines tackling the challenge posed by the slow production of these munitions.

Navy Secretary John Phelan acknowledged this issue as a primary focus for officials. “We’re looking into various avenues, including collaborating with different partners and exploring alternative manufacturing methods for these munitions,” he explained. “This is a critical priority for both the Secretary of Defense and the President, and we dedicate considerable time and effort to this, just as we do in shipbuilding.”
