New Jersey Teacher Charged with Abuse
A teacher from a primary school in New Jersey faces serious charges for allegedly abusing a student over several years. It has also been reported that she gave birth to that student’s child.
Laura Caron, who is 34 years old and previously taught fifth grade at Middletownship Elementary School, is said to have had inappropriate sexual relations with students living in her home, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
The alleged abuse reportedly started in 2016, when the boy was just 11, and lasted until 2020, when he turned 15. During this time, Caron was employed at the same school.
Authorities began looking into the case last year after the boy’s father hinted at it on Facebook, suggesting that Caron’s 5-year-old child resembled his son. Court documents indicate that Caron taught both the victim and at least one of his siblings. Over time, the boy and his brother became close friends with Caron, even staying at her house once or twice a week before living with her more regularly between 2016 and 2020.
The boy later confirmed to police that he had a sexual relationship with Caron, and also stated he is the father of her young child, who was born when he was only 13.
According to a friend of Caron’s, she even threw a baby shower for the child and told a friend that the child’s father was “outside the photo.”
Caron was arrested in January, and charges included sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault, which could result in a prison sentence of 10 to 20 years, along with additional charges related to risking sexual assault and child welfare.
The prosecutor’s office did not mention any specifics about the children in their press release. They did underscore that, “These allegations are deeply disturbing, particularly given the trust the accused held in relation to the victim.”
The Middletownship Police Department initiated an investigation after the boy’s father made those comments on social media.
In response to the situation, an official from the prosecutor’s office reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the vulnerable members of the community and vowed to pursue anyone who betrays that trust.
