New Detention Center Approved in Florida
The construction of a new detention center for undocumented immigrants near the Florida Everglades has been greenlit by the Trump administration. Dubbed “Crocodile Alcatraz,” this facility aims to hold individuals awaiting deportation.
Interestingly, federal funds, previously used by the Biden administration to accommodate asylum seekers, are being redirected for this project.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are working at turbo speed on cost-effective and innovative ways to realize our mission against the massive deportation of illegal criminal aliens,” Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem stated. “Thanks to our partnership with Florida, we will be expanding our facilities and bed space in just a few days.”
Construction began on the site this past Monday, and it’s anticipated to be completed within two months.
According to Florida Attorney General James Usmiel, the 30-square-mile site, located at an “essentially abandoned airport,” is expected to accommodate over 1,000 beds.
“We have some light infrastructure, many heavy-duty tent facilities, and trailer facilities,” Uthmeier noted. “We don’t need to build many brick-and-mortar structures.”
He added, “People don’t really go out there much except for alligators and pythons. There’s no place to hide, which makes it a unique location that offers efficient, low-cost opportunities for temporary detention facilities.”
Uthmeier also mentioned, “The boundaries are already set by Mother Nature. A lot of people thought it was a joke, but we’re serious.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his support for the initiative.
According to a statement from DeSantis’ office, “Florida will continue to lead immigration enforcement under his leadership. We’re committed to promoting the federal government’s role in enforcing immigration laws.”
