Neela Tanden Testifies on Biden’s Mental Vision Investigation
Neela Tanden, a former civil servant under Biden, testified before Congress recently regarding a mental vision investigation. Tanden has a substantial background as a Democratic operative, though her past controversial social media activity has kept her out of Biden’s cabinet.
“The White House hasn’t had the experience to question his orders as president,” she mentioned to the House Oversight Committee during her closed-door statement. “He was the one in charge,” she asserted.
Moreover, she emphasized that giving “cooperation” to the House Committee didn’t imply it should become a tool for valuable surveillance, especially when it looks back at the Trump administration, which she accused of multiple misdeeds.
Tanden was initially nominated for the role of OMB director, but her nomination was rescinded due to the lack of support in Congress alongside her history of contentious Twitter posts.
Criticism Over Social Media Comments
Former political leaders from both parties criticized Tanden for her personal jabs made online. One notable instance involved comments where she called Sen. Susan Collins “The Worst” and referred to other senators as “The Fraud” and various colorful names.
In total, she deleted over 1,000 tweets ahead of her confirmation hearing.
Concerns Over Funding Sources
During her testimony, Committee Chair Bernie Sanders expressed worry over the substantial funds the American Center for Progress (CAP) had received from corporations and special interest groups. Tanden had previously earned a significant salary while leading CAP, reportedly making about $365,000 a year.
Her ongoing connection to CAP became a talking point, especially since she had previously stated its mission was essentially to serve as a hub for countering Trump.
Tanden’s political history is notable; she has been involved in both Clinton’s presidential campaigns and played a role in drafting the Affordable Care Act while serving as an adviser under Obama.
Moreover, she has been vocal about the alleged Russian collusion concerning Trump, even promoting some discredited assertions as credible evidence at times.
Following her withdrawal from nomination, Biden expressed intentions to find a position for her within his administration.
Recently, Tanden’s involvement with the House Oversight Committee was related to investigations that question whether the current administration has effectively concealed any mental decline in Biden.
An aide revealed that Tanden had been permitted to provide testimony about her experiences from 2021 to 2023, conveying that the systems in place were inherited from the previous administration.
As for Trump, he pushed for an investigation into the matter, with oversight coming from Attorney General Pam Bondy and White House counsel David Warrington.
Biden labeled Trump’s inquiry a mere “distraction,” asserting that he was the sole decision-maker during his presidency.
