Suspected Co-Conspirator In California Fertility Clinic Bombing Passes Away In Jail

Federal Custody Death Following Fertility Clinic Bombing

Federal authorities are grappling with the recent death of Daniel Park, 32, who was accused of supplying explosive materials for a bombing at a California fertility clinic. Park was found unresponsive at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) last Tuesday and later pronounced dead at a hospital, though officials have not revealed the cause of death.

Park’s identity was confirmed as the only suspect held at the MDC. In the wake of his death, all visits to the facility have been suspended until further notice. Alongside Park, another suspect, 25-year-old Bertus, was involved in the bombing of the Palm Springs clinic on May 17. Authorities labeled them as anti-Natalists, with Bertus reportedly expressing extreme views online, suggesting a conflict with pro-lifers.

“When people are lost and distraught, death is always an option,” Park allegedly wrote in a 2016 online post.

Park was arrested on June 3 at John F. Kennedy Airport after being extradited from Poland. He was indicted on charges of providing significant amounts of explosive precursor chemicals to Bertus, who used them in the bombing. Federal prosecutors stated that Park had traveled to Europe just a few days after the attack.

Before his arrival in the U.S., Park had shipped around 180 pounds of ammonium nitrate to Bertus. He reportedly stayed at Bertus’s residence for a couple of weeks, where they conducted experiments. Notably, Bertus asked an AI chatbot about using fuel and ammonium nitrate for creating powerful explosions just days before Park’s arrival.

Investigators have found evidence of chemicals typically used in makeshift explosive devices at the residence where the two suspects were believed to have been experimenting.
