Tragic Death of LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng
A respected sergeant with the Los Angeles Police Department lost his life while responding to a crash on a busy highway. Shiou Deng, who had served the force for nearly three decades, was on duty when he was hit by a vehicle during an investigation of a prior accident on the 405 Freeway shortly after 2:00 AM on Monday.
The 53-year-old, who was married, had just turned on his emergency lights and exited his police car when the incident occurred.
“He was transported to UCLA Medical Center, but despite heroic efforts, he didn’t make it,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated during a press conference. “He died a hero, prioritizing the safety of others above his own.”
Disturbing footage from the scene showed the damaged police vehicle alongside a wrecked pickup truck, which, following the crash, was forced to stop. The truck driver assisted the police, and several individuals were taken to the hospital due to injuries sustained in the accident.
McDonnell remembered Deng as a remarkable individual and a dedicated leader who had committed over 26 years to his community, serving with “honor, courage, and compassion.”
“He was someone who genuinely cared about his family and friends, constantly helping those in need,” the chief added. “His engagement with others and his joy in what he did left a lasting impression on everyone.”
Promoted to sergeant just two years ago, Deng had also been part of a specialized evaluation unit for 17 years and was recently assigned to the West LA division.
As a somber tribute, firefighters honored Deng’s body as it was taken from the coroner’s office later that day. The loss has deeply affected the community, with Mayor Karen Bass expressing her sadness, stating, “This is a tragic day for our city. Sergeant Deng was a compassionate and selfless officer. His final act was one of service.”
