Joe Marinelli Passes Away at 68
Joe Marinelli, an actor celebrated for his work in shows like General Hospital, Santa Barbara, and Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, has died at 68.
He passed away on June 22 in Burbank, California, as confirmed by his wife, Jean Marinelli.
Marinelli’s agent, Julie Smith, disclosed to CNN that he had been battling throat and stomach cancer, a diagnosis he received several years prior to his death.
The actor was known for his vibrant performances across various series, including General Hospital, Santa Barbara, and more recently, The Morning Show.
“I really loved him and what he represented,” shared Mark Dupalas, a co-star from The Morning Show. “We might not have spent a ton of time together, but we had a strong connection.”
Director Alexander Payne, who worked with Marinelli on the 2004 film Sideways, called him “an extraordinary artist.” He recalled their early collaboration in film school, emphasizing Marinelli’s talent and generous spirit.
In response to the news of his passing, longtime friend and co-star Lee J. McCloskey took to social media to honor him. She described Marinelli as a “sweet guy,” and expressed how he was a remarkable acting partner and a philosophical friend.
McCloskey’s heartfelt tribute reflected on Marinelli’s virtues and the joy he brought to those around him. “It’s tough to say goodbye to such a dear friend. His goodness will be missed,” she added.
Born in Meriden, Connecticut, on January 21, 1957, Marinelli moved to California when he was just four years old. He attended various schools, including Arcadia High School in Los Angeles, before pursuing further education at Loyola Marymount University and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
Upon returning to the U.S., he built a career in acting while working full-time as a carpenter. Marinelli’s television journey included roles in Cagney & Lacey, Paper Dolls, Hill Street Blues, and LA Law, before joining the cast of Santa Barbara, where he portrayed the cross-dressing character Bunny Tagliatti from 1988 to 1990.
Later, he played bank robber Paulie Hardman in CBS’s Guiding Light and took on the role of detective Joseph Sorrel in General Hospital from 1999 to 2001. More recently, he appeared on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show alongside Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
Throughout his career, Marinelli amassed over 50 credits in film and television and had also been involved in recent projects on Paramount+, including Offers, Reboots, and Morning Shows.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, and their sons, Vincent and David.
