Rubio on Iran’s Nuclear Progress After US Strikes
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in an interview with Politico that Iran is currently “far away from nuclear weapons,” following recent US strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.
His remarks came after reports emerged, particularly from Reuters, indicating that the US had conducted a significant strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities, which, sources suggest, has set back Tehran’s nuclear program by just a few months.
Neither Trump nor the White House offered an assessment of the situation.
Rubio emphasized, “The bottom line means they are far more remote than before the president took this bold move,” during conversations at the NATO summit. He pointed out that there have been “serious, very important, huge damages on the various different components,” adding that more information is becoming available.
He also rejected several media reports as “false,” asserting they overlook the broader context of the situation.
On Wednesday, developments surrounding a ceasefire between Iran and Israel brokered by Trump seemed to be materializing, following announcements from both nations about a cessation of air strikes.
Israel had conducted a surprise offensive on June 13, targeting Iranian nuclear facilities and resulting in the deaths of military leaders.
In response to Israel’s actions, Iran launched a series of missile strikes aimed at Israeli military targets and urban areas, denying any intentions to develop nuclear weapons.
