Who is the candidate for mayor in NYC, Zohran Mamdani?

State Senator Zoran Mamdani emerged unexpectedly victorious in the Democratic primary for New York mayor on Tuesday.

He received a nod of recognition from former governor Andrew Cuomo.

According to unofficial results from the New York City Election Commission, Mamdani captured 43.5% of the first-choice votes among 11 candidates, while Cuomo garnered 36.3%.

Who backed Mamdani?

Mamdani, who is 33 and resides in Queens, has also built a network of support in Brooklyn and Manhattan, appealing to a diverse set of constituents.

Data from unofficial election results indicates strong backing for Mamdani in neighborhoods such as Washington Heights, Flatbush, Williamsburg, Astoria, Park Slope, Bed-Stuy, and Crown Heights.

On the other hand, Cuomo found favor in the Bronx and Staten Island, as well as support from Upper East and Upper West Side residents.

Before the primary, polling from Emerson College indicated that Mamdani was preferred two-to-one by voters under 50.

What does Mamdani stand for?

Mamdani’s campaign resonated with voters through the message: “New York is too expensive.”

His proposals include providing free childcare for children ages six weeks to five years, establishing city-owned grocery stores that operate at wholesale prices, and creating permanently affordable, rent-stabilized housing over the next decade.

“This campaign is for everyone,” he stated.

The young democratic socialist emphasized his track record, having served three terms in the state legislature.

How does he connect with democratic socialists in America?

This political movement aims to empower everyday people in their workplaces and communities, advocating for reforms like universal Medicare.

Mamdani has garnered support from notable democratic socialists, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Ocasio-Cortez remarked that Mamdani has united a coalition of working-class New Yorkers, positioning him as a leader.

If he wins, Mamdani would become New York’s second democratic socialist mayor, following David Dinkins.

What’s Mamdani’s background?

Mamdani moved to the United States from Uganda as a child and has lived most of his life in New York City.

At 33, he could become the city’s youngest mayor in over a century and the first Muslim and first Asian to hold the office.

What are his views on Israel?

Mamdani has criticized the Trump administration’s backing of Israel, accusing it of committing acts of genocide against Palestinians. He has consistently raised awareness about Palestinian rights.

While studying at Bowdoin College in Maine, he co-founded a chapter advocating for Palestinian justice.

Reflecting on his activism, Mamdani was arrested and charged in 2023 during a protest outside the home of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, where he called for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Recently, Mamdani stated that the issue of anti-Semitism has been misused by some mayoral candidates. Given New York’s diverse population, including a large Jewish community and many Muslims, he believes it’s vital to address these complex issues.

“Many New Yorkers have strong feelings about international events,” he expressed after his electoral win. “I won’t shy away from my beliefs about equality and humanity.”

He has also vowed to significantly boost the city’s anti-hate crime program to combat both Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.
