Azealia Banks Withdraws from London Festivals Over Political Pressure
Azealia Banks has pulled out of her upcoming performances at a London festival, claiming that the event’s promoters were pressuring her regarding a political stance on Palestine.
The 34-year-old artist took to X on June 24 to express her grievances in a detailed post. She announced, “So I’m canceling the Boomtown and Maiden’s Voyage. The promoter is trying to force me to either say ‘Free Palestine’ or not say anything at all, and they even hinted that I’d be removed from the bill.”
Originally, Banks was set to perform at Burges Park for the Maiden Voyage Festival and later at Boomtown in Hampshire in August.
In her post, she went on to say, “They’re basically trying to manipulate me into supporting Palestine, or I’ll be cut from the lineup. But I’m not connected to the agenda of what I perceive as a cheap group.” She expressed frustration, suggesting that the whole situation reflects a lack of ethical consumption under capitalism.
With a sharp tone, she criticized what she saw as “thinly veiled racism and obvious anti-Semitism” from some members of the LGBTQ+ community who support Hamas, even tagging her post with “#FuckPalestine.”
In another statement, Banks reiterated her feelings, stating, “No, I’m not claiming to represent Palestine. But I’m rejecting your ridiculous slogans and performance tactics.”
Reflecting on the longstanding conflict, she noted, “This war has existed for decades, long before many of you were born, and now you’re suddenly forced to engage with terms like ‘genocide’ and ‘Zionist’ without understanding their real implications.”
Furthermore, she criticized the disconnect between people’s comfortable lives and the exploitation happening elsewhere, lamenting, “Blood from children working in mines barely reaches your consciousness while you’re living your life.”
In her tirades, Banks again challenged the festival organizers, emphasizing the futility of appeasing what she regards as misguided protesters who exploit the Palestinian situation.
Reportedly, the festival organizers have denied exerting any pressure on her regarding support for Palestine.
