Red Bulls negotiating to sign German international Timo Werner

Reports indicate that the Red Bulls are in discussions to bring German international Timo Werner from RB Leipzig to New York.

While no agreements have been finalized, there seems to be a sense of optimism that a deal could be made to have Werner join MLS.

This German winger has been on the Red Bulls’ radar for quite some time, even having the chance to sign with them last summer, as noted in various sources.

Talks around bringing Werner to the team have been ongoing, and it’s also mentioned that he might reunite with former Leipzig teammate Emil Forsberg.

Werner recently spent a year and a half on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, contributing to Leipzig’s historic DFB Pokal victory in 2023, which was their first trophy ever.

He initially joined Leipzig in 2016 after moving from Stuttgart, netting 78 goals in 127 Bundesliga games, before transitioning to Chelsea in 2020. He made a return to Leipzig in 2022 and later transferred to Tottenham at the start of 2024.

Although his career trajectory has waned somewhat, he could still be a significant addition for the Red Bulls, who are currently seventh in the Eastern Conference and dealing with injuries to some players after their recent match.

Werner could provide valuable support alongside Forsberg and standout Lewis Morgan, both of whom were sidelined during a draw with Toronto on Wednesday.

The Red Bulls recently ended their pursuit for the MLS Cup, which saw them actively recruiting Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, among other players.

Interestingly, the team is also in advanced talks with Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren, as reported earlier this week.
