Maine Rep. Laurel Libby Has Her Voting and Speaking Rights Reinstated

Speech and Voting Rights Restored for Maine Rep. Laurel Libby

Maine Representative Laurel Libby, a Republican, regained her speech and voting rights on Wednesday. This came after a tumultuous period where Democrats had silenced her due to her views on transgender athletes.

Libby’s ability to participate was reinstated five months after she faced backlash from Democrats, who criticized her for social media posts that had called out male athletes identifying as transgender who had won pole vault competitions in high school. In February, a vote silenced her, passing 75-70, which meant she could not address the House unless she formally apologized for her stance on gender identity issues.

In response to her treatment, Libby filed a lawsuit against Ryan Fecto, the Democratic House chair in Maine. In May, the Supreme Court stepped in to grant an emergency relief application, allowing her to speak and vote again while her case was pending in the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

Interestingly, Libby mentioned to Fox News Digital that she wasn’t aware her rights would be restored until almost the session’s end when lawmakers were preparing to adjourn. Just before this, House Majority Leader Lori Gramrich proposed a resolution to restore her full voting and speaking rights, which was approved by a substantial majority of 115-16.

Libby expressed her belief, stating that not just Mainers, but a significant number of Americans oppose what she views as an extreme approach by Democrats. She criticized their stance on allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports, saying, “I know they’re losing on that issue… they’re just trying to save face.”

President Trump had previously signed an executive order aimed at keeping men out of women’s sports, emphasizing the protection of female athletes from potential discomfort. Furthermore, federal departments were instructed to monitor compliance with this order, suggesting consequences for educational programs that failed to adhere to it.

In contrast to Trump’s directive, Maine officials have chosen to continue allowing transgender athletes to compete on teams aligned with their identified gender, citing local laws. As an example, a transgender-identifying boy claimed victory in the Maine Class B championship for Greeley High School’s track and field team earlier this year.

This ongoing issue has led to federal investigations into Maine, with the Department of Justice even filing its own lawsuit against the state. Some school districts have supported Libby, enacting their resolutions to safeguard women’s sports from what they describe as male encroachment.

Since February, there have been three significant protests in the state capital, Augusta, against the current policies surrounding this contentious topic.
