Gillibrand Critiques Mamdani’s Comments on Intifada
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from New York has strongly challenged Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s controversial remarks regarding the Intifada, asserting that if democratic socialists are serious about leading New York City, they must openly denounce it.
Gillibrand, known for her pro-Israel stance, criticized Mamdani for not rejecting the “globalization of Intifadas,” particularly as he requested a sit-down to further explain his position.
“As the leader of a city as diverse as New York, home to the largest Jewish population in the country, he should take a clear stand,” Gillibrand remarked during a conversation on WNYC.
The senator pointed out that it’s insufficient for the 33-year-old Queens assemblyman to merely question the term Intifada as a general concept of resistance rather than an incitement to violence.
“Intentions don’t matter as much as perceptions,” she emphasized. “For many Jewish Americans, including those in New York, the term Intifada can imply permission for violence against Jews.”
Gillibrand elaborated, saying it’s a serious term with historical connotations linked to war, destruction, and targeting of Jewish communities.
“For those looking to represent a city as diverse as ours, such statements can be deeply harmful, hurtful, and simply inappropriate,” she added.
Earlier this week, Gillibrand reached out to Mamdani after his unexpected win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and she is now seeking a meeting with him to discuss these issues directly.
“I’ve never met with Mr. Mamdani, so I requested a meeting. I’m determined to hold that conversation,” she stated.
Gillibrand indicated she had already shared her concerns regarding his views on Israel and surrounding conspiracies with Mamdani.
“This issue is very important to me, and I feel a responsibility to defend these principles that matter to New Yorkers,” she concluded, expressing her commitment to work with him to ensure protection for all, should he assume office.
