Virginia Sheriffs Endorse Attorney General Jason Miyares
A group of 19 sheriffs from Virginia have thrown their support behind incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares following the Democratic nomination of former Attorney General Jay Jones to challenge him in the upcoming November election.
In a letter addressing a colleague shortly after the primary, the sheriffs stated, “The choice is clear. The decision is ours.” They praised Miyares for his dedication to law enforcement and first responders in Virginia, encouraging other sheriffs to back his reelection bid.
Jones, on the other hand, is campaigning on a platform that aims to protect Virginia from the policies of former President Donald Trump’s administration. The sheriffs framed Jones’ proposals negatively, pointing to a belief that they undermine law enforcement.
They highlighted the progress made in law enforcement over the past four years and warned their peers against allowing Jones to reintroduce what they referred to as a “tide wave of lawlessness, violence, and illegal drug activity.”
“We ask that we unite in support of Attorney General Jason Miyares, and remind everyone in the law enforcement community of the significant differences over the last four years,” the sheriffs wrote.
The letter criticized Jones’ proposed policies, claiming they would lead to tangible harm for Virginians, impacting law enforcement practices and introducing measures like eliminating cashless bail and vulnerable sentencing reforms.
They also referenced his stance on mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses near schools, voicing concerns that such policies would endanger youth.
The letter was signed by several sheriffs, including Kyle M. Moore, William Kidd Jr., and Travis M. Sampto, along with others in the law enforcement community.
Virginia is holding statewide elections this year, and the outcomes could set the tone for the competitive elections ahead in 2026.
Jones has also been critical of Miyares, stating that he has failed to stand up to certain political pressures and has not actively worked to protect Virginia from external influences. He argues that the state needs leaders who prioritize local issues over external interests.
As of now, Jones has not responded to inquiries seeking comments on the developments from Fox News Digital.
