Reflections on Biden’s Debate Impact a Year Later
Last year’s presidential debate saw a noteworthy moment for Joe Biden, which many believe changed the trajectory of the upcoming 2024 election.
During the debate, it felt like Biden, alongside Trump, was engaged in a rather tense exchange. Some of Biden’s comments were a bit unclear, and Trump made sure to capitalize on those moments with pointed responses.
Biden addressed concerns about wealthy Americans’ tax contributions, noting that the U.S. has about 10,000 billionaires—he initially miscounted, saying “1,000 trillion.” He argued that these billionaires only pay a mere 8.2% in taxes, suggesting that if they simply paid an effective rate of around 24% or 25%, the country could significantly reduce its debt. “We can tackle everything we need, from childcare to elder care,” he asserted.
His comments lingered for a moment before he awkwardly stated something about defeating Medicare, which left many, including himself, puzzled about his actual point regarding Covid.
When the moderator, Jake Tapper, turned the floor over to Trump, he did not hold back. “He’s right. He did defeat Medicare,” Trump remarked, seeming to play off Biden’s confusion.
Democratic leaders appeared to rally behind Biden, suggesting that Republicans are preparing to bring Trump back into the spotlight.
Biden claimed to have reduced illegal immigration by 40%, stating, “It’s better than ever. We will continue until we completely ban total initiatives, and we’ve increased border patrols and asylum officer numbers.” It was a bold assertion, but Trump retorted with skepticism, “I really don’t think he even knew what he said at the end.” He criticized Biden for being ineffective, accusing him of “destroying” the nation with inadequate border policies.
Moreover, Trump described Biden using somewhat inflammatory terms, connecting him to ongoing international conflicts in a rather derogatory way. Biden also shared a personal story about his late son, emphasizing the impact of his service and sharply rebutting Trump’s controversial comments about soldiers in previous wars. “My son wasn’t a loser or a sucker. You’re the loser here,” he declared, expressing a deep emotional conviction.
Trump dismissed Biden’s criticisms as reactions to a fabricated story that, he claimed, originated from a “third-rate magazine.” This exchange in the debate encapsulated the tension and the stakes at play as the election year approached.
