Thomas Massey’s Campaign Pushes Forward Amid Trump’s Criticism
Representative Thomas Massey from Kentucky has reported a significant fundraising week, with over $177,000 raised, despite facing intense criticism from former President Donald Trump. Massey’s campaign announced this on Thursday, noting that 1,900 contributors rallied in support of him, even as Trump has vowed to back challengers against him.
The backlash from Trump comes in the wake of Massey’s stand against certain issues, particularly surrounding recent military actions. Some donors view the criticism as an effort by outside forces to undermine his position. Massey has framed his re-election campaign around a critical question: “Can foreign lobbyists buy seats in Congress?” His campaign emphasized the need for legislators to prioritize American interests over foreign influences.
Moreover, Massey critiqued the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), suggesting it seeks to suppress Congressional dissent by threatening key challengers to those who oppose a pro-Israel stance. Despite concerns that Trump’s intervention typically decreases funding for opponents, this situation appears to be different, with Massey seeing increased financial support.
“My supporters believe that voting should reflect the wishes of constituents rather than merely aligning with a president or foreign lobby,” he stated. Recently, Massey was one of two Republican lawmakers who opposed Trump’s expansive budget proposal, citing its potential to exacerbate the national debt.
In a previous legislative move, he also partnered with a California Democrat to block potential military action against Iran, which he deemed unconstitutional. Trump’s recent comments indicated his intent to potentially unseat Massey in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, labeling him as not aligned with the MAGA movement.
Massey’s main challenger is currently a registered nurse, Niki Lee Ethington. Other potential candidates include former United Nations ambassadors and state senators, with Trump yet to make an official endorsement in the primary.
As of now, Massey’s office has not provided comments regarding the ongoing developments. It’s certainly shaping up to be a tense political battle in Kentucky.
