U.S. Strikes Iran Following Ceasefire Violation Claims
On Friday, the United States launched strikes against Iran after President Trump accused the Islamic Republic of breaching a ceasefire. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that military action was taken in response to an attack by Iran on a merchant vessel navigating the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM mentioned that U.S. aircraft targeted “Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar facilities.”
This development comes in the wake of an incident where Iran allegedly targeted a Singapore-flagged cargo ship with a drone in the same area on Thursday.
“The Iranian military’s unjustified attacks on commercial ships are a clear breach of the ceasefire,” CENTCOM stated. “Moreover, Iran’s reckless actions have compromised the freedom of navigation in these vital waters, crucial for international trade.”
Shortly before the U.S. response, Trump had expressed his views on Truth Social, labeling Iran’s actions as a “stupid” violation. He said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has launched at least four one-way attack drones toward vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, with one successfully hitting the upper deck of a large cargo ship.” He added, “Even with the damage, the ship managed to keep sailing. We intercepted and shot down three other drones. Clearly, this is a foolish breach of the ceasefire agreement.”
When questioned in the Oval Office about potential repercussions for Iran, Trump replied, “We’ll see.” This comes just days after both Iran and the U.S. had signed a memorandum aimed at enhancing peace negotiations, marking 118 days since the conflict with Iran began on February 28th.
