Last week, the WNBA continued its trend of distancing itself from conservative fans, turning down a brief statement that could be read as supporting conservative views.
The league has been consistently leaning towards liberalism, exemplified by the ongoing activism surrounding figures like Kate Linklark and events like the George Floyd tribute this past May. It seems that patriotism has been largely dismissed in this environment.
This pattern persisted over the weekend when WNBA commentator Rebeccarobo expressed support for the president, sparking comments perceived as too conservative for the league’s standards.
While commentating alongside Pamward during the game between the Las Vegas Aces and the Indiana Fever, a significant matchup for female basketball fans, the actual game became secondary to Robo’s remarks.
During a discussion about a foul call, Robo found himself at odds with the referee’s decision.
“It’s okay to have different opinions,” he stated.
Fans shared a clip where Ward asked Robo, “So they don’t agree with you?”
Robo responded, “They will, and I don’t agree with them. And that’s fine. That makes America great, right, Pam Ward?” A brief silence followed as the remark hung in the air for about eight seconds.
“Maybe I should rephrase that,” Robo eventually said, breaking the tension. An apology was anticipated but not immediately issued.
Ward encouraged differing opinions, agreeing with Robo, “That’s absolutely fine.”
Ultimately, Robo conceded and apologized, saying, “Yes, that’s a better way to put it. I’m sorry about that.”
Reactions from fans varied, with some expressing that she should have stood her ground. One fan remarked, “There’s no reason for her to apologize. The fact that we disagree is what makes America great!”
Another fan from Florida chimed in, “So do they love America, or not? It’s confusing.” This situation seems to highlight the ongoing tension in the league regarding its political stance.
The overarching sentiment, particularly from former gymnast Jennifer Say, points to a consistent pattern among athletes, where voicing anything that could be interpreted as conservative is discouraged.
It raises questions about whether every player truly shares the same beliefs, especially considering the clear political messaging from the WNBA.
Some find it “patently ridiculous” to interpret comments like Robo’s as politically charged simply because a figure like Donald Trump is in office.
