Escape of Evin Prison Director Precedes Israeli Strike
Hedayatra Farzadi, the notorious director of Tehran’s Evin prison, reportedly escaped just before an impending Israeli attack. Concerns over threats to his safety and a deal involving his adult son in Jerusalem prompted this decision.
Israeli officials allegedly reached out to Farzadi’s son, Amir Husseni Farzadi, urging him to convince his father to release a political prisoner. They claimed that doing so could save his life from the imminent strike.
In messages shared with Israeli intelligence sources, Amir was instructed to alert his father, warning him that the attack was expected to happen in a matter of minutes. When Amir asked if something had already occurred, the Israeli agent assured him that nothing would happen if Amir passed the message along.
Following this, Amir contacted his uncle and then got in touch with his father. Witnesses reported seeing the two leave the area hastily before the attack commenced. Since then, there has been no word on Farzadi’s whereabouts.
International Response to Allegations of Human Rights Violations
Farzadi has held the position of Evin Prison director since 2022 and has faced serious accusations regarding human rights abuses, such as torture and murder of prisoners, particularly political dissidents. The allegations include assaults, starvation, and sexual violence against female inmates. Both the U.S. and the European Union have issued sanctions against him, designating him as a specially designated national, which prohibits any dealings with him.
The U.S. Treasury Department has highlighted the brutal conditions in Evin Prison, especially during the recent protests, where many detainees were subjected to severe torture. Prior to this role, Farzadi spent ten years at Dizel Abbado Prison, where he was notorious for orchestrating public brutalities against minor offenders.
The extent of human rights abuses in Iran is becoming alarming, as noted by international observers. Reports indicate that the number of executions has dramatically increased, without precise figures for those executed based on political affiliations. The EU has condemned the Iranian government’s efforts to suppress freedom of speech, religion, and assembly, particularly against journalists and human rights advocates.
