The city council in Providence, Rhode Island has sanctioned a mailer aimed at advising undocumented immigrants on how to respond if confronted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
This mailer will be distributed to homes in the area, instructing residents not to open their doors unless presented with a valid warrant, specifically one that bears a judge’s signature. This was reported by Fox News on Friday.
In related news, President Donald Trump’s administration is stepping up immigration enforcement, which has led to incidents where ICE agents and law enforcement officers have faced harassment and violence from certain groups.
Council President Rachel Miller stated regarding the mailer, “The Providence City Council is collaborating with organizations that represent our diverse communities to foster safety and inclusivity amid the fear and uncertainty that affects our city’s immigrant populations, largely due to the harsh policies of the Trump administration.”
According to a Fox article, the city has allocated $17,000 for this mailer initiative.
It’s notable that in 2022, Rhode Island was involved in incidents where individuals fled police custody, as reported by Breitbart News. Members of the MS-13 gang, which has connections to the Dominican Republic, have been implicated in various crimes in the area, including a case where a released individual was accused of child sexual abuse in Providence.
The Breitbart News article further states:
In November 2023, police apprehended an undocumented immigrant in Providence on multiple counts of child abuse and sexual assault. Just two weeks after the arrest, this individual was released on bail and later returned to the community by the Rhode Island Department of Corrections.
Rhode Island maintains strict sanctuary policies established in 2014, which prevent local law enforcement from collaborating with ICE.
Moreover, a few months later, another undocumented person from Guatemala was accused of similar crimes against a child in Rhode Island, as mentioned by Breitbart.
A recently conducted Economist/YouGov survey indicated that a majority of people believe measures should be taken to shield undocumented immigrants from ICE agents. This finding was reported by Breitbart on June 6, highlighting concerns over immigration enforcement by publicizing the locations of ICE agents.
