Republican lawmaker describes NYC socialist mayoral victory as a benefit for the Republican Party

On Sunday, Rep. Riley Moore of West Virginia commented on the recent win of democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral primary, labeling him a “gift to the Republican Party.” He suggested that other candidates might want to distance themselves from Mamdani during the upcoming election cycle.

Moore mentioned on CNN’s “Confederation Status” that Mamdani’s proposals, like government-run grocery stores and free shipping, could really impact property values in places like West Palm Beach, Florida. “For me, this is a gift for the Republican Party,” he remarked, asserting that Mamdani would serve as a clear contrast for Republicans in the campaign ahead.

When CNN’s Jake Tapper probed if there were concerns about Mamdani’s victory, Moore reflected on the nature of the Democratic primary. He noted that the establishment seems reluctant to embrace new, less popular candidates like former Governor Andrew Cuomo, hinting at a possible shift in dynamics.

CNN commentator Ashley Allison mentioned that it’s crucial for Democrats to support Mamdani, despite some challenging statements he’s made. She acknowledged that Mamdani managed to find his niche amidst a competitive primary landscape, calling for unity within the party.

Mamdani’s campaign has generated buzz with bold ideas that many conservatives criticize, such as fully funded city colleges and free child care. His vision was recently endorsed by notable figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders. In a discussion with CNN, Mamdani criticized capitalism, alluding to the idea of better wealth distribution, echoing sentiments from historical civil rights leaders.
