Trump Critiques NYC Mayoral Candidate Mamdani
Former President Donald Trump has openly criticized Zohran Mamdani, the socialist candidate for New York City mayor, warning that federal funding could be at risk should he win and put his agenda into action.
In a recent interview on Fox News, Trump labeled Mamdani as “pure communist,” expressing concern over the implications for the city.
“He’s a communist. I think it’s very bad for New York,” Trump stated. “Let’s say that if he comes in, I’ll be president, and he’ll have to do the right thing or they’re not getting the money.”
The NYC director mentioned that the city received over $100 billion in federal funds in 2024 through multiple programs, which could significantly impact Mamdani’s proposals.
“What I can say is this: Any New York mayor has to act on his own, or the federal government is becoming very financially demanding,” Trump added. “I was saying there are no socialists in this country.”
“He’s a radical left-madman,” he further commented.
Trump’s remarks came shortly after the 33-year-old Mamdani triumphed in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary against former governor Chris Cuomo, making him a leading candidate for the November election.
Mamdani’s platform features proposals such as rent stabilization, city-run grocery stores, free public transportation, tax hikes in affluent neighborhoods, and a freeze on rent as a means to uphold the city’s sanctuary status.
In response, Mamdani, on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” denied Trump’s communist label, stating, “No, I’m not.”
“I wasn’t, and I had to start to get used to the fact that the President would talk about what I looked like, how I sound, and where I came from,” Mamdani said.
Mamdani also expressed his belief that billionaires shouldn’t exist, highlighting the current inequality.
“Frankly, I don’t think we should have a billionaire because it’s so much money in such an inequality moment. We need equality in our cities, in our states, and in our nation as a whole,” he stated.
Furthermore, he committed to preserving NYC’s sanctuary status during Trump’s ongoing deportation initiatives.
“This is a policy that was previously defended by Democrats and Republicans,” Mamdani remarked, referring to current mayor Eric Adams. “It ensures that New Yorkers can fully participate in the life of the city they belong to.”
Prominent figures such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib have voiced their support for Mamdani’s campaign.
