Trump Administration Challenges Los Angeles Sanctuary Policy
The Trump administration is taking legal action against Los Angeles, targeting its sanctuary city policy, which limits collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) initiated a lawsuit against Los Angeles on Monday, as per documents reviewed by a news outlet. In this lawsuit, federal prosecutors assert that LA’s sanctuary regulations not only interfere with the missions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) but also violate the U.S. Constitution.
“The Sanctuary City Laws in Los Angeles are illegal,” the DOJ stated in the legal filings in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
The lawsuit claims, “These laws and policies impede and discriminate against the enforcement of federal immigration laws, contravening the Constitution’s supremacy clause.” A representative from Mayor Karen Bass’s office has not yet provided any comments regarding this matter.
After President Trump’s reelection, LA has positioned itself prominently among sanctuary cities, opposing the administration’s ambitious deportation strategy.
Similar to other sanctuary laws, Los Angeles’s policies restrict how local officials can interact with federal immigration officers. The ordinance bans the use of city resources—including staff and property—for immigration enforcement and blocks data sharing with deportation agents.
In California, policies have made it notably challenging for deportation officers to operate effectively.
The DOJ’s lawsuit further argues that the city’s refusal to collaborate with federal immigration authorities since early June has resulted in lawlessness, riots, looting, and vandalism. This turmoil led to the federal government deploying the California State Guard and U.S. Marines in efforts to restore order.
In response to ICE’s enforcement actions in LA, protests erupted, with demonstrators surrounding federal buildings, clashing with agents, and causing significant damage. Media reports indicate that over 1,000 individuals participated in these protests, which included blocking traffic and vandalizing public property, resulting in approximately $20 million in damages.
Los Angeles marks the latest area in a series of legal challenges against sanctuary laws. Since taking office, Trump has been involved in various lawsuits aimed at cities and states with similar anti-ICE policies.
In June, the administration filed a lawsuit against New York over its restrictive sanctuary legislation, involving Democratic officials like Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James. Additionally, federal prosecutors have also taken action against Chicago’s sanctuary policies and several New Jersey cities for limiting cooperation with ICE.
