Challenges for Vegan Restaurants in New York City

Vegan restaurant owners in New York City are facing significant struggles amid rising costs and a shrinking customer base largely due to congestion pricing, as reported by Side Dish.

Several well-known establishments have closed recently, including Modern Love this month and Vegan Seasoned earlier in the year. This follows the shutdown of Greedy Vegans and Blossom last year. Even with substantial backing from Danny Meyer of Shake Shack fame, Slutty Vegan had to shut down two of its locations in recent months.

Richie Romero, a notable restaurant owner, expressed, “Operating a restaurant in New York is incredibly tough. For niche markets like vegan options, it’s even more challenging.” Romero had to close his vegan bakery on the Upper East Side last year, which had been called The Innocent.

To adapt, Romero and others in the healthy food sector are seeking innovative ways to attract more customers, impacting their profits. They’re all grappling with post-pandemic inflation, tariffs, high rents, and congestion pricing.

For instance, Romero implemented a profit-sharing agreement with property owners in a “underutilized” hotel, which has helped the vegan establishment Omakacedo endure.

Omakacedo operates a unique vegan dining experience called Vegan Omakaze Speed Eatery, available Wednesday through Sunday in a Sanctuary hotel situated in Midtown.

“We’ve managed to find a solution,” Romero stated.

Similarly, Nat Milner, founder and CEO of Plant Junkie, transformed his business model by moving from Midtown, where the office lunch crowd hasn’t fully returned. Since relocating to 226 Front St., he’s gained a loyal clientele that includes locals and tourists alike.

According to Sam Goldfinger, CFO of The Butcher’s Daughter, the key to survival for many vegan restaurants lies in being inclusive rather than preachy. “One night, people may enjoy steak, and the next, they could go for a plant-based meal,” he noted. “We’re not aiming to convert anyone; we just want to enrich their lives.”

The Butcher’s Daughter has branches in Nolita and Williamsburg, with upcoming locations in West Hollywood and Venice, California, as well as Austin, Texas. Christophe Caron, who has owned Delis & Sarasin in West Village for 13 years, remarked that congestion pricing, food costs, and tariffs have consequences for all restaurant owners.

Despite the hurdles, new vegan restaurants continue to emerge in New York. For example, Reverie opened at 135 Metropolitan Ave. in Williamsburg, serving a variety of delightful dishes, plant-based desserts, and signature cocktails crafted by Executive Chef Guy Vaknin.

Additionally, Brooklyn Roots Collective, a large vegan space of about 10,300 square feet located in a former warehouse at 255 Randolph Street in East Williamsburg, is set to open on July 11th.

Jennifer Giuliano, founder and CEO, highlighted that this will be a major hub for plant-based restaurateurs, urban farmers, vintage sellers, sustainable artisans, educators, and small businesses.

The facility will feature plant-based offerings from food trucks, pop-up restaurants, and even cooking classes, while Oko Farms aims to educate people about urban gardening.

Giuliano shared her vision: “The Brooklyn Roots Collective is all about addressing some of the reasons that lead restaurants to close. By creating a shared space that hosts multiple vegan food vendors alongside markets, events, and workshops, we aim to make it more feasible for plant-based entrepreneurs to thrive.”

On a different note, Plidwin Hotel & Cottages on Shelter Island is initiating a summer campaign to entice guests to extend their Hamptons vacation. From July 13th to September 1st, visitors can enjoy experiences like sailing, sunset lobster rolls, and refreshing mimosas at Morning Sunrise.
