Additional California July 4th events called off because of immigration raids

Communities in Southern California are increasingly postponing or canceling Fourth of July festivities due to ongoing federal immigration enforcement in the area.

One significant event that has been called off is the Gloria Molina Grand Park summer block party, which was set for July 4th. The event’s website mentions the decision was made “in light of recent events affecting parts of downtown Los Angeles and the region.”

No new date has been announced, but it was noted that the party will take place in “late summer.”

In Kadahi, a city where 97% of the population identifies as Hispanic, a celebration planned for July 3 has also been postponed. City officials confirmed that while the park remains open, regular programming will continue.

Nearby, the Bell Gardens community canceled a concert and two outdoor films, including one scheduled for this Saturday and another for July 3. City officials cited “concerns about residents’ safety regarding federal immigration enforcement activities” as the reason for the cancellations.

Huntington Park joined in, canceling its Independence Day celebration originally planned for July 3. The reason for this cancellation was not specified.

Other predominantly Hispanic areas, such as El Sereno, have also scrapped their Fourth of July events, including the community’s annual parade.

All scheduled celebrations within various LA City Council Districts, which include many Hispanic communities in East LA, have been affected due to the immigration enforcement actions.

Jordan Escobar, a resident of East Los Angeles, shared his thoughts with local media, saying he understands the decision to cancel events, highlighting the emotional weight many feel about celebrating under the current circumstances.

“I have families who are affected by this, and friends who are witnessing these injustices,” Escobar remarked. “So, I get why people might be hesitant to celebrate. Expressing our opinions is important, though.”
