Several defense witnesses for Brian Kohberger are hesitant about traveling to Idaho for his upcoming murder trial. This includes his former boxing coach, Jesse Harris.
Harris, who owned a boxing gym and claims he worked with Kohberger as a teenager, has asked a judge in Pennsylvania to cancel his subpoena. He cites significant challenges, including that it’s been nearly 15 years since he last saw Kohberger and his wife is battling cancer, which makes leaving his business, even for a short trip, difficult.
Apparently, Kohberger’s father used to take him to the gym to build his confidence. It’s where kids go when they don’t make other sports teams, but Kohberger, he mentioned, never actually competed—he just practiced.
A notable aspect of the case is that a former prison guard, who retained Kohberger’s records from a brief stay in Pennsylvania before his extradition to Idaho, might not need to testify. Kohberger’s lawyers are expected to handle the record summons themselves.
During a recent court hearing, only Anthony Somma, a former classmate of Kohberger, was willing to travel to Boise voluntarily. Others were instructed to come back to court next week. It seems more witnesses have been called by the prosecution, although their exact ties to Kohberger aren’t immediately clear.
Kohberger’s defense team has begun arranging accommodations for those who will testify, while some others, like Brandon Andreola, tried unsuccessfully to contest their subpoenas.
In an interesting twist, Ralph Vecchio III, who was also subpoenaed, said he had never met Kohberger. The judge found the current subpoena for him to be invalid but allowed the defense attorney an opportunity to make necessary corrections.
A few witnesses, like Maggie Sanders, couldn’t attend the hearing due to travel plans, but she’s expected back in court shortly. Ann Parham, a former advisor from Kohberger’s high school, will also testify. The dynamics between the witnesses and Kohberger, as well as the implications of their testimonies, continue to evolve as the trial approaches.
