Trump’s Influence Looms as Tillis Withdraws from Senate Race
Donald Trump is urging Senator Tom Tillis to frame his decision not to pursue reelection as “great news” for the 2026 North Carolina campaign. This comes after Tillis criticized Trump for not backing his spending and tax proposals during significant votes last weekend. With Tillis stepping back from midterm events, it seems likely that Trump and his team will play a pivotal role in selecting the GOP nominee for North Carolina.
A Republican strategist commented to Fox News that, “It’s the president’s decision. He and his team will have those discussions,” stressing Trump’s considerable sway in the party.
Tillis Blames Trump Following His Surprise Announcement
Tillis recently stated he believed that Trump’s handling of his “big and beautiful bill” was a contributing factor in his unexpected retirement announcement. The strategist also noted that Tillis’ departure opens the door for other potential candidates, with Lara Trump—Trump’s daughter-in-law—topping the list. Lara, who previously co-chaired the Republican National Committee (RNC), has a strong connection to North Carolina, having grown up there.
“She has a name, and she’s got a powerful fundraising machine,” the strategist added, suggesting that Lara could be a formidable candidate if she decides to run. Four years ago, she contemplated a Senate bid during the 2022 midterms but ultimately decided against it to focus on her young children, though she’s now hinting at future possibilities.
Lara lives in Florida with her husband Eric Trump, and there were murmurs about her as a potential candidate to succeed Marco Rubio in Florida, but she issued a statement late last year to remove herself from consideration.
Another contender in the mix is Michael Whatley, the RNC Chair and former chairman of the North Carolina GOP. He has been a key figure in the party and may eye Tillis’s seat as well. Additionally, Rep. Richard Hudson, a strongly aligned Trump supporter and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, could be another name to consider.
Other North Carolina Republican congressmen are expressing interest in the race, including Rep. Pat Harrigan and possibly Timothy Moore and Brad Knott. Some insiders suggest that the GOP could benefit from candidates more in line with conservative values than Tillis, who has attracted criticism within the party for his willingness to bipartisanship.
“It’s been clear over the years that leaders pursuing compromise are becoming rare in Washington,” Tillis remarked in a statement following his announcement.
Democratic Response and Potential Candidates
On the Democratic side, former Senator Wiley Nickel has already begun his push for the nomination. Notably, former Governor Roy Cooper is also considered a major challenge, as he is viewed as a strong candidate for Democrats aiming to flip the seat. However, securing a Senate race win in North Carolina has proven elusive for Democrats since 2008.
After Tillis’ announcement, analysts have adjusted the race’s outlook, now categorizing it as a toss-up and labeling it a prime opportunity for Democrats looking to gain ground in North Carolina.
